November,10th

Today we practiced the COMPARATIVES. We have to take into accound if the adjective is SHORT or LONG. When there is a short adjective we have to add -ER + THAN. For example: LONGER THAN. If the adjective is long we have to add MORE beautiful THAN. We know if the adjective is short if it has one or 2 syllables. And long adjective has more than two syllables. Then there are adjectives such as BIG, HOT, WET that change the spelling when doing comparisons. For example: BIGGER; HOTTER; WETTER. Finally adjectives that end in -Y are considered shor adjectives so they form the comparatives with -ER (but be careful with the spelling) HAPPY-HAPPIER.
When we consider that 2 things or people are equal then we use AS......AS in affirmative and interrogative sentences and NOT SO ........AS in negative sentences. For example:
She's as tall as my sister.
She isn't so tall as my sister.
Is your sister as tall as you are?
There are irregular adjetives:
GOOD- BETTER THAN
BAD- WORSE THAN
FAR- FURTHER THAN
Please go to the links about comparatives and practiced them.
Next Thursday we'll review the comparatives and we'll start with the SUPERLATIVE.
Thanks a lot!!!!!!

lunes, 9 de noviembre de 2009

November, 9th

Today we practiced the comparatives. I'm glad to see that you don't have any problem with them. I explained the SUPERLATIVE. as homework you have to read the rest of the photocopies and do the exercises about the superlative.
REMEMBER: To form the superlative you have to add the article THE. Then if the adjective is SHORT you have to add -EST and if the adjective is LONG you have to write MOST.
Example:
THE smallEST
THE MOST intelligent
Don't forget the irregular adjectives:
GOOD / BETTER THAN / THE BEST
BAD / WORSE THAN / THE WORST
FAR / FURTHER THAN / THE FURTHEST
Click on the links about comparatives and superlatives and practice them.
THANKS!!!!!

Pease go to page 120. there you'll find the tapescript about the litening activity we did today(6.1)
I gave you a photocopy about THE COMPARATIVE. Read it carefully and do exercises 1,2,3 and 4.
In order to compare people or things we have to take into account SHORT ADJECTIVES (tall) and LONG ADJECTIVES (wonderful). If the adjective is short I add -ER + THAN and if the adjectives is long MORE + ADJECTIVE + THAN.
For example:
PETER IS TALLER THAN MARY.
LONDON IS MORE WONDERFUL THAN PARIS.

REMEMBER:
In English the ADJECTIVE always goes before the noun. For example BIG house. But when we have more than one adjective, there is a general guide to the correct order:
SIZE + AGE + COLOUR + NATIONALITY + MATERIAL + NOUN
For example:
A BIG NEW GREEN SPANISH COTTON DRESS

We've been working with the pronunciation of REGULAR VERBS in SIMPLE PAST.
REMEMBER:
We add -ED to the infinitive to create the Simple Past. For example: WORK - WORKED
Click on Past Tense Regular Verbs Pronunciation. Here you'll find information about the different ways to pronounce -ED.
DON'T FORGET THERE ARE THREE DIFFERENT WAYS OF PRONOUNCING -ED:
-ED is pronounced /Id/ when the final sound of the verb in infinitive is /t/ or /d/
Example: WAIT - WAITED ; NEED - NEEDED
-ED is pronounced /t/ when the final sound of the verb in infinitive is a voiceless/unvoiced sound such as p-k-s-ch-s-sh-f-x-h
Example: ASK- ASKED ; DRESS - DRESSED ; HELP- HELPED ; FINISH - FINISHED ; RELAX - RELAXED ; STOP- STOPPED ; WATCH - WATCHED
- ED is pronounced /d/ when the final sound of the verb in infinitive is a voiced sound such as l – v – n – m – r – b – v – g – w – y – z – and vowel sounds (diphthongs)
Example: ANSWER - ANSWERED ; CLEAN - CLEANED ; CALL - CALLED ; CRY - CRIED ; MOVE - MOVED ; BELONG - BELONGED
In the classroom we've done listening activities about the three different ways of pronouncing-ED. Click on the links and practice them.

REMEMBER:
In a VOICED SOUND the vocal folds(cuerdas vocales) vibrate. In a VOICELESS SOUND, the vocal folds don't vibrate. Put two fingers on the Adam's apple(la nuez) and say the sound /l/. Can you feel how the vocal folds vibrate?. But if you say the sound /f/, the vocal folds don't move. For further information, click here http://eolf.univ-fcomte.fr/uploads/ressources/pronunciation/voiced_unvoiced/voiced_unvoiced.htm
